General Manager Group Financial Security US

Charles Abonnel is the General Manager of Group Financial Security US (GFS US), a Group Compliance team based in the US and tasked with the management of the US Economic Sanction Enforcement framework, on a group wide basis. Charles has done his entire career at BNP Paribas, and held positions in IT operation, and was up to 2023 the head of US Dollar Clearing, a $ 70 million top line revenue business that combines operation, commercial relationship and a group-wide control tower. In the group for more than thirty years, of which 25 in New York, Charles also worked in Italy, Greece and London. He holds a PhD in applied mathematics and an engineering degree, but, as a life-long learner, he is first and foremost a voracious reader and is constantly amazed by how the Bank creates a learning environment for anyone with enough curiosity to simply ask “how does it work?”. Throughout his career, he managed both large and small organizations and has developed a great interest in transformation and leadership development. Those two focus, coupled with a strong sense of mission, have led Charles to a rich set of responsibilities, blending operational excellence, Business development and large-scale remediation. He like to “sweat the small stuff” and is always excited with improving and industrializing BAU processes. Involved in environmental causes in his local community of the lower Hudson Valley, Charles and his wife Maria are the happy stewards of their three cats and a few hundred thousand bees.
